Valentin was a priest considered that the decree was unjust a decree of the
Governor Claudius III of Rome. It prohibited the holding of marriages for the
young, because in their opinion the unmarried bachelors were better soldiers,
since they had fewer ties.
Then Officer Asterius, in charge of imprisoning him, wanted to ridicule and
test Valentin. He challenged him to return his sight to a daughter of his,
named Julia, who was born blind. Valentin accepted and in the name of the Lord,
he returned the sight.
This officer, Asterius and his family, were converted to Christianity.
However, Valentinus continued to be imprisoned and the weak Emperor Claudius
finally ordered him to be martyred and executed on February 14, 270. Young
Julia, grateful to the saint, planted an almond tree with pink flowers by her
grave.
The date of celebration of February 14 was established by Pope Gelasius to
honor St. Valentine between 496 and 498 AD. The remains of St. Valentine's are
currently preserved in the Basilica of the same name, which is located in the
Italian city of Terni (Italy).
